How would the outcome of meiosis be different if synapsis did not occur?

Synapsis occurs to facilitate crossing-over event in meiosis, leading to recombinant genes, leading to a greater variability in the genetic traits an organism will p on to its offspring. Without synapsis each haploid cell would contain exact copies of one of the parental chromosomes rather than recombinants thus reducing variabilty. There would still be some variety, depending on how many chromosomes the cell has, since the chromosomes will segregate randomly.
