Please i want innovative solutions, how to move asteroid from it's orbit to avoid collision with earth?

I watched something recently describing that NASA has something like patrick explained planned in case of any large asteroids heading towards earth. They would send a large, quick spacecraft to the location of the asteroid, and then would have it travel directly next to it starting a few years before it reaches earth. By remaining in the exact location next to the asteroid, the gravitational pull from the craft should be enough to pull the asteroid just off course.
